Les Bas Courtils Barn

Renovations

JGA were engaged as the lead planning and technical designers, taking on a pivotal role as Design Support during the construction phase. This involved close collaboration with fellow consultants and the developer, Infinity Group.

The barn conversion elegantly transforms a derelict structure built from traditional Guernsey granite into a one-bedroom dwelling, seamlessly merging its historic character with modern functionality. The design emphasizes the preservation of the barn’s external heritage, with careful restoration of the existing external granite walls to protect the barn’s historic identity.

Internally, the space has been reimagined with a contemporary open-plan layout, creating a bright, functional and welcoming environment suited to modern living. The design strikes a perfect balance of old and new, maintaining the rustic charm of the exterior while providing sleek, modern comfort within. Fenestration has been carefully considered to ensure privacy for both the occupants and neighboring properties, with strategically positioned roof lights that flood the interior with natural light while avoiding any overlooking issues.

This thoughtful conversion celebrates the unique craftsmanship of Guernsey granite while offering a fresh, vibrant living space, exemplifying a sensitive and respectful approach to heritage restoration.

"Working on Les Bas Courtils has been a great experience, and one that is unique. Comprising the conversion of a listed building into flats, renovation of a derelict barn, and 4 new build properties, each section of the site had their own challenges and constraints to overcome. However, working closely with Infinity we were able to overcome these, providing high quality new build units to the rear of the site, and upgrading the protected barn and house throughout to achieve & exceed modern construction methods/regulations while retaining the historic nature of the protected structures. Overall the project has been a pleasure to be involved in, and it is fantastic to see the derelict/run down structures, returned to their former glory."
