JGA were approached by the Guernsey Sports Commission to design the centrepiece for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2023 Island Games and is a remarkable symbol of unity, tradition and innovation.
Inspired by the iconic water wheels of Guernsey’s past and the design of the gold medal of the games, designed by local graphic Designer Chloe Sarre, this structure beautifully encapsulates the spirit of the event. The centerpiece features a water wheel designed to mimic the circular form and intricate detailing of the medal, creating a visual and symbolic connection between the games and the Island of Guernsey.
A highlight of its significance was its role in the opening ceremony, where each competing island brought water from their respective islands and poured it into the wheel. This ceremonial act symbolised the gathering of islands and cultures, blending their distinct identities into one shared celebration of athleticism and community. Positioned prominently overlooking the main venue of the games, Footes Lane, the centerpiece also serves as an interactive and visually striking feature, drawing attention and engagement from visitors.
Beyond its ceremonial role, the design is a testament to the creativity and cultural sensitivity of JGA, merging aesthetics, functionality and symbolism in a way that celebrates both the Island Games and Guernsey’s identity. JGA are proud to have been involved in a project that has a lasting legacy within the community. A huge thank you to DW Lloyd for the manufacturing of the wheel.
